Fund Raising - Charity Quiz - Friday 22 January 2010

The Club is delighted with the response to our annual Charity Quiz, which also incorporated a Charity Raffle and Charity Auction, and took place following our meeting on Friday 22 January 2010. The proceeds from the evening together with personal donations and other raffles, exceeded £2,000 and will be distributed to our nominated charity for this club year - WONS Orphanage in the Chunga district of Zambia.

One of the primary club activities is raising money for charitable causes. Over the years these have included helping sponsor the Irish Deaf Soccer team on their trips to successive World Deaf Soccer Cup finals, supporting the Share a Dream Foundation. With the support of Gary Kelly who donated a signed team shirt to raffle, club members donated generously to the benefit fund for the Leeds United supporters who tragically lost their lives in Turkey three seasons ago. In more recent years the club supported Leukaemia Research, the International Myeloma Foundation, and the National Council for the Blind in Ireland.

The club was also proud to be a major contributor to the benefit fund, organised in 2002 by our colleagues in Birmingham, for ex-Ireland International David Langan whose injuries sustained during his football career have resulted in disability. Over the last two years the club raised funds in support of St.Luke's Hospice, Kenton, Middlesex, in memory of our late chairman, Tony Booth, who passed away in January 2002 at St.Luke's, after a long illness.

In 2004, the club raised funds for Temple Street Hospital in Dublin with one of our members, Maurice McCrohan running in the Dublin Marathon and with raffle proceeds from our anniversary Dinner Dance.

In January 2006, the Club organised a Charity Sports Quiz, the total proceeds of which were donated To St Luke's Hospice, Kenton.

The proceeds from some of the raffles held during the course of our monthly meetings in 2006 were donated to Cricklewood Homeless Concern.

The Club is delighted to have been able to organise a Charity Quiz at the January 2007 meeting in aid of Cystinosis Foundation Ireland. The charity was chosen, as founding member and the first secretary of RISSC (London), Sue Maguire (nee Dunne) has two children Siobhan and Ciara who suffer from Cystinosis. Sue's husband Andy is also a founding member of ROISSC Dublin.

Our annual Charity Quiz for 2009 took place following our meeting on Friday 16 January. The proceeds from the evening totalled £1,000 and were distributed equally between our nominated charities for the 2009 Club Year - 'Friends of Michael Sobell House' and 'Teenage Cancer Trust'.
