In the matches played earlier this week, Cork City had a comfortable 3 nil victory over Kilkenny City in Pool A while Waterford United, whose manager Alan Reynolds resigned on the day prior to the game, travelled to Cobh and defeated Ramblers with the only goal of the match.

In Pool B, the recent good run of Bohemians was brought to an abrupt end at Dalymount Park when local rivals St Patrick’s Athletic won 3-1. In the other match Drogheda united defeated Monaghan United by the odd goal in three. The cup holders Longford Town travelled to the Showgrounds where they had a comfortable 2 nil success over Division One league leaders, Sligo Rovers in Pool C.

Finally, Pool D saw Shelbourne bring their recent poor run of form to an end with a 2-1 victory over Division One side, Kildare County while in another Dublin derby the students of UCD defeated beleaguered Shamrock Rovers by a single goal.

The recent speculation that the winners of the Eircom League Cup may be granted entry to the lucrative Setanta Cup caused the Premier Division clubs to apply themselves more assiduously to the task of winning than hereto and resulted in no real shocks occurring.

The quarter final fixtures are scheduled to be played on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th July 2005 with the visit of holders Longford Town to Premier League leaders Cork City and the Dublin derby between Shelbourne and St Patrick’s Athletic the pick of the ties.
