eircom League clubs qualify for Setanta semi-finals...01/09/2008
The second series of matches in the 2008 Setanta Sports Cup commenced on Monday evening. Troubled Cork City travelled to Belfast and secured their place in the semi-finals when a brace from Denis Behan secured a two nil victory over Cliftonville. Down in United Park, the current holders Drogheda United also progressed to the semi-finals with a comfortable three nil success against Dungannon Swifts.


Boylesports joins FAI as official betting partner...29/08/2008
The FAI has announced that betting firm Boylesports has agreed a two year contract, with a further two year option, to join the Association as its official betting partner and will contribute up to €1million to the international and domestic game over the extended four year period.


Super Saints sweep past Swedes in UEFA Cup ...28/08/2008
The eircom League of Ireland's final representatives in Europe this year, St Patrick's Athletic, came from behind to score a magnificent 2-1 victory over IF Elsborg of Sweden in Richmond Park tonight and qualify for the first round proper of the UEFA Cup. The Inchicore side showed character and dersire to come from behind and late goals from Jason Gavin and the outstanding Mark Quigley gave them a hard earned but deserved victory.


Ireland Under 16s defeat Wales in Pembroke Cup...28/08/2008
The Republic of Ireland Under 16 side scored a one nil victory over Wales at Home Farm FC this evening to retain the Pembroke Cup. Ireland dominated throughout but had to wait until the sixtieth minute before second half substitute David Murphy claimed the winning goal.


FAI Statement on Cork City FC...28/08/2008
Cork City FC entered into Examinership on 18 August 2008 and a meeting took place today with the appointed Examiner. Later this evening the following statement was released. "A meeting of the Independent Club Licensing committee was convened tonight and they deducted 10 points from Cork City FC for being involved in an Examinership process as per section 3.1.2 of the club licensing manual".


Wexford Youths stun Cork City in Cup semi-final ...25/08/2008
First Division side Wexford Youths created history in Turners Cross tonight with a one nil League of Ireland Cup semi-final victory over Cork City. The home side failed to score an eight minute penalty and the visitors then took the lead through Paul Murphy on 24 minutes. They held on for the rest of the match and now face holders Derry City who will be contesting their fourth consecutive final.


Under 17 Women defeat Italy in Poland Tournament...23/08/2008
The Ireland Under 17 Women's team scored a one nil success over Italy this morning in their final game of the Quadrangular Tournament hosted by Poland. The goal came midway through the first half from Megan Campbell and gave Ireland the runners-up position, behind Russia, in the competition.


'Eire' to appear on Senior match day Jerseys...16/08/2008
The FAI today announced that it will use 'Eire' on senior international match day jerseys when the World Cup qualification campaign begins in September 2008. The name will appear on the customised stitching applied to match day jerseys worn by squad members.


St Patrick's Athletic in magnificent UEFA Cup recovery...14/08/2008
St Patrick's Athletic recovered from a two goal deficit in this afternoon's UEFA Cup meeting with IF Elfsborg of Sweden to earn an away draw in the second round first leg of the competition. Things looked ominous for the Inchicore side when they went two down after thirty minutes, but second half strikes from Mark Quigley and Gary Dempsey, earned a magnificent draw and sets up a potentially riveting
second leg in Richmond Park on Thursday 28 August 2008.


Drogheda United take Kiev to the brink...06/08/2008
Reigning eircom League of Ireland champions Drogheda United took the champions of Ukraine, Dynamo Kiev to the wire in the second round, second leg of the UEFA Champions League in Kiev this afternoon. Drogheda trailed 1-2 from the home leg, but they twice came from behind today, through goals from Shane Robinson and Graham Gartland, but the 2-2 draw was not enough. The final minutes saw Adam Hughes miss a gilt edged chance from six yards and Shane Robinson strike the post, but all to no avail.
