Saturday afternoon's Scottish Cup Final saw Heart of Midlothian trounce their Edinburgh rivals Hibernian by five goals to one. Irish manager Pat Fenlon and his assistant Liam O'Brien joined Hibernian in mid-season and have achieved their primary target of Scottish Premier Division survival, but will nevertheless be hugely disappointed with this very poor performance by their charges. Head Coach Noel King has announced an initial twenty man squad for the forthcoming UEFA U21 qualifier against Italy in the Sligo Showgrounds and the preceding friendly encounter with Denmark in Tallaght. There are four newcomers to the squad, defender John Egan (Sunderland) and the midfield trio of Samir Carruthers (Aston Villa), Sean Murray (Watford) and Coleraine native Eunan O'Kane (Torquay United). Carruthers and Murray will link up with the squad after they have completed the Under 19 Elite Qualifying Stage in Portugal on the 31st May 2012. It was suggested that regular captain Robert Kiernan (Wigan Athletic) may yet link up with the squad should he recover from his injury problems, but by his own admission, this seems unlikely. Injury also ruled out midfielder Adam Barton (Preston North End) while Conor Henderson (Arsenal) has only recently recovered from serious injury. Underage Head Coaches Paul Doolin and Noel King will have had much food for thought as they prepared to select their respective squads for the upcoming fixtures at U19 and U21 level. Three of last year's successful Under 19 squad, Samir Carruthers (Aston Villa), Anthony Forde (Wolves) and Sean Murray (Watford), all midfielders, are again eligible and played in the preliminary stage of this year's competition.
