fires first goal for opening UEFA qualifying victory
Substitute Keith Fahey, making his competitive debut, scored the winning goal after 76 minutes, which secured victory over Armenia in Yerevan this afternoon to give Ireland a satisfactory start to their UEFA 2012 Qualifying campaign. Ireland were reasonably disciplined throughout with O'Shea, Dunne and St Ledger in control at the back. In midfield, Green and Whelan were competent without showing too much while Lawrence became more prominent as the game progressed. Up front, Kevin Doyle was immense and clearly Ireland's 'Man of the Match' while skipper Keane was industrious but will rue missing two gilt edged chances to secure a more comfortable victory. Shamrock Rovers increased their lead at the top of the Airtricity League Premier Division to seven points this evening with a Billy Dennehy goal giving them victory over Sligo Rovers in Tallaght. Their three closest challengers all dropped points. St Patrick's Athletic were held to a one all draw at Galway United while Sporting Fingal and Bohemian played out a scoreless draw in the Morton Stadium.
