Three clubs at the summit of the League of Ireland Premier Division resumed their campaigns with away day adventures this Friday evening. Defending champions Bohemian extended their lead with a three one success from their short coastal trip to Bray Wanderers while nearest challengers Derry City went down to the only goal for Dundalk in Oriel Park. League of Ireland First Division leaders Shelbourne extended the gap at the summit with a seven nil trouncing of league newcomers Mervue United in Tolka Park this evening while Wexford Youths consolidated their current fifth position with a one nil victory over Athlone Town in Ferrycarrig Park. for Sligo Rovers in Europa League...02/07/2009
Sligo Rovers went down to a disappointing two one home defeat to KS Vllaznia of Albania in the first qualifying round of the Europa League this evening. The home side dominated the first half and should really have gone ahead when Boco's shot hit the crossbar just before the interval. The visitors took the lead on 69 minutes and six minutes later doubled their advantage through an Alan Keane own goal. The drama was not yet ended for Keane as his 81st minute penalty hit the crossbar and was cleared. With two minutes of normal time remaining Sligo were awarded another penalty with the visiting goalkeeper being red carded. Rafael Cretaro made no mistake from the spot to give 'The Bit o Red' just a glimmer of hope for the second leg in Shkoder on Thursday next 9th July. Monaghan

Following the summer break, the League of Ireland resumed this evening with First Division side Monaghan United scoring a one nil victory over visitors Limerick to leapfrog their opponents in the league table. The winning strike came after twelve minutes courtesy of David Freeman. Sligo
Rovers break new ground in Europa League...02/07/2009
The Showgrounds will play host at 7.00pm on Thursday evening to the opening fixture in the new Europa League when Sligo Rovers take on KS Vllaznia of Albania in the first qualifying round. The second leg is set for the town of Shkoder on Thursday 9 July 2009. Should Sligo progress, they would then travel to face Rapid Vienna from Austria in the second qualifying round on Thursday 16th July with the return leg in the Showgrounds on Thursday 23rd July 2009. The Organising Committee and the nine participating clubs met last week to discuss the situation surrounding the postponement of the 2009/2010 Setanta Sports Cup competition. Following the collapse of Setanta Sports, it is reported that the Setanta Ireland division of the broadcaster is seeking to secure the future of their Irish operation and if successful would be positively disposed to the continuation of the competition.
